About Us

This toolkit is specifically designed to fill several important gaps in the African media ecosystem specifically related to coverage about climate change. African newsrooms are facing the same challenges media outlets everywhere are encountering where journalists are asked to do more with less. These pressures often lead to reduced or superficial coverage of climate change-related issues and what little reporting is available in mainstream African media is frequently produced by U.S. and European outlets.

This toolkit aims to change that by providing practical, actionable information for African journalists to help improve their reporting of climate change topics, with a specific focus on amplifying African expertise in climate and related fields. All of the material contained in this toolkit is intended solely for educational purposes with no political or financial objective.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Who produced this toolkit?

Producing this toolkit was the collaborative effort of dozens of individuals and organizations across the continent. The China-Global South Project, an independent, non-partisan U.S.-based NGO, served as the organizing partner that spent a year building this project with grant funding.

All of the content for this toolkit was produced by a team of scholars, journalists, editors and multimedia content creators based in various African countries (see above for bios of the different team members).

  • Who is the China-Global South Project?

The China-Global South Project (CGSP), formerly known as The China Africa Project, is a non-profit independent multimedia organization dedicated to exploring every aspect of China’s engagement with Africa. CGSP is registered as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation in the United States with no partisan agenda whatsoever and does not advocate on behalf of any country, company, or culture. CGSP produces a mix of editorial content that combines original material with carefully curated third-party information.

  • Who is this toolkit intended for?

Anyone interested in learning more about the devastating impact that climate change is having on communities across Africa will benefit immensely from the information contained in this toolkit. However, early stage digital journalists and editors working in large, mainstream African newsrooms are the primary target audience for this initiative.

The toolkit also aims to engage social media influencers who focus on climate-themed issues and who reach enormous audiences, often larger than those of traditional media outlets.

  • Why is this toolkit necessary?

The current media ecosystem is not set up to showcase African expertise in the coverage of climate change in African countries. This may sound unusual, but it’s true. The prevailing media narratives about climate change in Africa predominantly come from the U.S. and European countries. When so-called “African experts”are asked to comment on climate change issues impacting the continent, too often these “experts” are either from countries in the Global North or don’t even reside in African countries.

This toolkit aims to change that by providing actionable information on how to engage credible African scholars and analysts who live in the communities directly impacted by climate change.

The toolkit also aims to help young, early-career journalists to improve their reporting skills with practical insights from experienced scholars and editors across the continent.

  • Who can I talk to if I have any questions about this toolkit?

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about any of the information contained within this toolkit, please do not hesitate to contact Njenga Hakeenah, the project coordinator for this initiative, at njenga@climatereporting.org.
